Crazy Tech Gifts For Xmas 2012

Crazy Tech Gifts For Xmas 2012 :

#TV Remote Control in a Pillow :

I said these were crazy xmas gifts and this one is no exception! If you buy this remote pillow/cushion you will never have to look for the TV remote control again.

The trickiest thing is to remember to “activate” the pillow when you want to use it, but once you learn to use the buttons in the correct order and point it in the right direction, it’s a very functional remote. A real surprise!

#Turn Your iPad into a Pinball Machine

The app-supported pinball controller for iPad is attached to your iPad adding Flipper buttons and a spring-loaded plunger that make pinball gameplay unbelievably real. Once connected to your Apple device, unlocks five free tables in the wildly popular Pinball HD Collection app.

#LED Sound Activated T Shirt

This shirt is awesome! The sound activation works perfect and is great to wear out to parties or night clubs. It is not easy to wash this t-shirt and probably better to get dry cleaned, however it is a great gimmick and a lot of fun. Well worth the buy.

#Tetris Light

If you are addicted to the simple tetris game you need this cool Tetris Lamp Light. What an excellent Tetris Constructible Light Lamp! Tetris, one of the most popular video games of all time is a deceptively simple yet completely addictive game in which players must fit falling blocks together.

This excellent Tetris Constructible Light Lamp is an amazing light with 7 interlocking pieces, definitely not for young children. The neon magic-cube design is sure to bring fun and style to your desktop. The 7 interlocking tetromino pieces can be stacked in any combination, so you can make it look however you want! The light turns on when the pieces are all stacked together and it turns off when disassembled.

Habitual PC Maintenance Tips

10 Habitual PC Maintenance Tips you must know :

As the old saying goes, the better you treat your tools, the better they will treat you. Your computer, even though you may not think of it on this base a level, is a tool. A very expensive tool that often is one of the most important parts of your life these days, but a tool nonetheless. So the better you treat it, the more maintenance you can provide it with and the better cared for it is on a regular basis, the longer it will last. In theory, at least.

How To Fix I/O Device Errors On External Hard Drives

How To Fix I/O Device Errors On External Hard Drives :

The Problem With I/O Errors :

The problem with Input/Output (I/O) errors is that they’re generic—the error messages you see are what Windows, Mac, and Linux say when they know there’s a problem but they don’t know exactly what that problem is.

It could be that your USB or eSATA cord is a little bit loose. Or it could be that your external hard drive is knocking on death’s door. That means you’re going to have to do some sleuthing—you can’t just find a blog by somebody who got the same error message and do what he did.

The Easiest Problems To Fix :

Some I/O errors are really easy to fix. Most them have to do with the cords that connect your external hard drive to your computer.

The first thing to check—and you may already have done this—is that all of your cords are connected tightly. Check the connection to your external hard drive and to your computer. If you’re connecting to a USB hub, make sure the cord from the computer to the hub is connected tightly at both the hub and computer ends or—and this is preferred—connect the external hard drive directly to one of the USB ports on your computer, bypassing the hub and any problems it may have.

The next easiest problem to fix is cord crosstalk. The electricity in one set of wires tends to leak into other wires, so when you have two wires close together on your desk, they may be interfering with each other. Interference isn’t a big deal to your mouse or keyboard—Windows just ignores spurious data—but it’s a big deal to your hard drive where Windows assumes the files it opens and saves are accurate.

To check for crosstalk problems, disconnect any unnecessary devices on your computer and move the cords for the necessary devices further away from your external hard drive. You may also want to disable Bluetooth and move your cell phone across the room.

Don’t worry, if you have a crosstalk problem, you can avoid I/O device errors on external hard drives permanently by buying better cables—just look for shielded cables. Good shielded USB cables include dampeners on both ends: these are little cylinders containing magnets near the plugs.

The final cord-related problem requires a friend or an expenditure. It could be that you have a faulty cable. This is especially likely if you just bought your external hard drive or if you tend to abuse your cables by not putting them away properly.

If you have a friend with a similar external hard drive (and the cables aren’t hardwired), borrow his cables. If that’s not an option, buy replacement cables. You should be able to buy short replacement cables for USB and eSATA for less than $5 if you shop around.

Difficult But Fixable Problems :

If you don’t have a cord problem, the chances that you’ll be able to recover from I/O errors decreases rapidly. Since there are two types of hard drives, there are two different sets of solutions.

For magnetic (high capacity) hard drives, I/O errors often start occurring when the ball bearings get worn or bent out of shape. This happens mainly to drives which have been active for more than two years total or drives which have been dropped. If you get I/O errors on a new external hard drive, I recommend you return it immediately—it was probably dropped during shipping or part of a defective lot.

A key sign that your I/O problem is caused by bad ball bearings is clicking or grinding noises inside your external hard drive every time you plug it into your computer.

You can often get a magnetic drive to start working again by shrinking the ball bearings a little bit so they fit back into their regular tracks. How do you shrink an almost microscopic ball bearing inside a hermetically-sealed hard drive? Basic physics: you freeze it—all metals shrink when cooled.

Note that this can be dangerous and there’s a risk that not just your data and your computer will be destroyed but that you’ll be electrically shocked.

Put your magnetic external hard drive in a Zip-Lock bag. Squeeze out the air. Then put that bag inside another Zip-Lock bag and squeeze out that air. Put a rubber band around the drive in the bag to keep new air from leaking in so you don’t give your hard drive freezer burn.

Put the bagged external hard drive in the freezer for at least an hour and preferably overnight. Then get your computer ready to copy files off the drive as fast as possible.

When you’re ready, take the hard drive out of the bag, connect it to your computer, and start copying files. If the hard drive dies in the middle of copying, freeze it again. Hopefully with this technique you can recover all of your important files.

Solid State Drive Recovery :

Solid state drives tend to fail more gracefully than magnetic drives, so you don’t need to explain to your family why you have a hard drive in the freezer.

The main cause of I/O errors on a solid state drive is too many writes. Every time you save a file to a solid state drive, you use up one of the limited rewritable sectors. Early solid state drives had about 10,000 writes; modern drives typically have 100,000 to 1,000,000 writes.

Once the writes are gone, you can no longer write to that sector. You can still write to other sectors, but Windows isn’t smart enough to only write to working sectors, so it gives you the I/O error.

There are two pieces of good news here—one short-term and one long-term. Short-term, you can still copy files off of your solid state external hard drive, so you haven’t lost any data. Long-term, researchers are working on new tools which will allow computers to work around failed solid state sectors so you can start to write files again. But until then, there’s no real way for solid state drives to fix I/O device errors on external hard drives.

The Facts about DVRs and Energy Consumption

The Facts about DVRs and Energy Consumption :
(An update)

There has been a lot of hype about the energy consumption of DVR units provided by cable and satellite television companies. Sensational headlines scream that DVRs are destroying your budget and melting the glaciers. These are quickly followed by sarcastic rebuttals and disparaging comparisons to Al Gore.

So what is the real deal? How much do these things consume? Are they evil vampires or just the latest thing for silly people to be paranoid about?

1) They’re Like Light Bulbs…

The deal is this: Data shows that set-top boxes consume energy at about the rate of your average incandescent light-bulb, between 30 and 50 watts.

By contrast, articles like the one I’ve cited claim that cable and satellite DVRs use as much power as a refrigerator or a/c unit.

So there’s nothing to it, right? Fridges and a/c units obviously use more power than that.

2) DVRs That Never Shut Off

DVRs use much less energy than refrigerators or a/c units do when their compressors are running. According to a table from GE, a refrigerator/freezer uses about 450W, and a window unit a/c approximately 1000W.

The problem is that unlike these appliances DVRs never turn off. Even when they are “off” they consume nearly as much power as they do when on. By contrast, refrigerators and a/c units do not run their compressors 24 hours a day.

Now, DVRs need be ‘on’ enough to maintain a connection with the service provider and to receive software updates; it would be impractical to have them completely power down when they are not being used.

3) How to Really Compare DVRs with Refrigerators

At 40W, DVRs obviously don’t consume energy nearly as quickly as a fridge (450W) or a/c unit (1000W) when it is running its compressor. But fridges and a/c units turn on and off as regulated by a timer or thermostat, while DVRs are constantly on. (NOTE: The most modern and energy efficient refrigerators have consumption rates below 150W even when the compressor is running, but most homes are not yet equipped with them. )

4) What to Take Away From This?

The alarmists are clearly exaggerating this issue.

But their sarcastic critics are severely underestimating it.

If your concern is your energy bill, it’s probably not that big of a deal. Having a DVR will cost you something on the order of a few tens of dollars per year, depending on your energy rates.

However, if your concern is the economic and environmental effects of the overall energy consumption of millions of consumers, it is a big deal, and improving the efficiency of DVRs is certainly worth promoting.

More importantly, however, neither side has talked about what’s really shocking about all of this: keeping a 40W light bulb burning all the time is like having a second refrigerator in your house!

How To Speed Up Your Computer In 10 Minutes

How To Speed Up Your Computer In 10 Minutes

1—Old Programs Make Your Computer Slow

Technically, a program installed on your computer uses nothing but hard drive space until it’s activated. The problem is that many programs these days get

 started when your computer boots.

2—Old Registry, Slow Computer

The Windows Registry has come a long way from the Windows 95 and Windows 98 days when a bad registry entry could crash your computer and your only solution was to reinstall Windows. But problems in the Windows Registry can still slow down your computer.

3—Anti-Virus, Anti-Speed

You should always run a Windows computer with anti-virus enabled (although sometimes I will suggest that you take a chance and turn it off to get the maximum amount of speed out of your computer). But you don’t have to use the anti-virus’s default settings.
One thing most anti-virus software does which slows down your computer is scan your hard drive periodically for infected files.
Check your anti-virus settings to see what kind of control you have over hard disk scans. For maximum speed, you can turn them off and then run them manually once a week—just don’t forget them!

4—Taskbar Applets Slowing You Down

It’s not uncommon to see computers today with three or more taskbar applets all dealing with wireless network settings. That’s insane—every one of those applets takes up part of your computer’s memory and computer processing (CPU) power, denying that memory and CPU to other programs on your computer which could use them to run faster.

Take a good look at the taskbar applets in the bottom right corner of your screen and decide whether you need all of them. If you don’t, you have two options:

Uninstall them completely: go to the Add/Remove Programs wizard in the Control Panel and remove the applet’s associated program.
Disable them from starting up automatically: use a startup manager program (available on free download sites) to remove the applets from the list of programs which start automatically. Beware, some programs reinstall themselves into the automatic startup list each time you run them manually.

5—Seeking A Faster Computer Through Defragmentation

Seeking is the word computer scientists use to describe what your computer does when it tries to find a file on your hard drive. Files can be stored on your hard drive in two different ways:

Fragmented: this is like a giant pile of old mail on your desk. When you go looking for your phone bill, you have to dig through piles of other junk to find it. I sometimes let mail pile up this way because it’s faster than sorting mail when it arrives; Windows saves files in big piles like this because it’s faster.
Defragmented: this is like keeping everything in a nice alphabetically-sorted file cabinet. When you need to find something, it’s really quick—but when you need to save something, it’s rather slow. Because it’s slow, Windows doesn’t defragment files on its own.

Ways to Run your PC faster

Ways to Run your PC faster :

#1: Turn Off Anti-Virus (Leave On Firewall)

When you need a quick speed boost to play a game or finish an assignment, try turning off your anti-virus software. As long as you don’t open any infected files you should be safe and the speed increase can be significant.

#2: Plug In Laptops

All laptops built in the last 10 years make their batteries last longer by slo

wing down the computer processor when you don’t seem to be using all of it. Although this works great to prolong battery life, it means that your laptop runs slower when it runs on battery.

#3: Close Unnecessary Programs

Right now my computer says there are 198 programs running—but that’s a lie. Computers can only run one program at the same time for each computer processor in your computer. My computer only has one processor, so it can only run one program.

Computers hide this secret by switching between running programs thousands of times faster than humans can perceive. They switch between programs so fast that computer processor times are measured in nanoseconds.Closing unnecessary programs can easily double the speed of an overloaded computer.

#4: Add Memory

There’s really only one way to make your computer run faster—get faster hardware. All of the other tips in this article tell you how to optimize your computer for speed, but if you’re serious about making your computer run faster, you’re going to need to upgrade its hardware. Drives are best to upgrade .

#5: Defragment

Cleaning your filesystem is a lot easier than cleaning your childhood bedroom. Simply go to the control panel and start the defragmentor. Of course we mention this in our computer maintenance checklist. It’ll take a few hours the first time you run it each month, so you probably want to let it run overnight.

#6: Reinstall Windows

Many system administrators got in the habit of reinstalling Windows 95 or 98 every year because they’d fill up with crud and slow down to a crawl.

Recent versions of Windows don’t fill up with crud as fast nor slow down so much, but if your computer is inexplicably running slow and nothing else works, your best solution may be to reinstall Windows.

#7: Cool CPU

The electricity that powers your computer travels pretty much the same speed—60% the speed of light—no matter what, but when your computer gets hot, the electricity doesn’t travel as far as it does when your computer is cool. That means that your computer may need to send hardware instructions several times before they arrive. And, if your computer gets too hot, it’ll automatically shutdown, which is the ultimate slow down.

#8: Use A Separate User

If Windows is running slow for you, but you’re not prepared to reinstall it yet, you may find a speed boost by creating a new user account. Your new user account won’t start up as many minor programs automatically and won’t have any accidental misconfigurations.

The Windows 8* & Ultrabook™ App Innovation Contest

A Chance to earn name & fame : (an update by Technowarriors) :

""" The Windows 8* & Ultrabook™ App Innovation Contest """ :

The goal of this competition is to get your app into the Intel AppUp online store in time for Christmas.

300 round 1 winners will each be sent an Ultrabook, for free, to be used to test and fine-tune your app

The first 50 successful round 2 entrants will receive a $1,000 prize for getting their app in the AppUp store

All round 2 entrants are in the running for 1 of seven $10,000 cash prizes

The final winner gets the $20,000 grand prize

Every single entrant also goes in the fast lane for the app approval process.

That's a total prize package for the big winner of $31,000, plus additional promotion and visibility for you and your app, plus you are sent an Ultrabook!

Get your Ultrabook enabled Windows* 8 app in the Intel AppUp® store for your chance at one of 300 Ultrabooks and a cash prize pool of $140,000.

Round 1: Deadline is October 24, 2012

What is the Challenge?

To write an Ultrabook enabled Windows 8 application and have it posted on the Intel AppUp store by December 1, 2012.
What sort of applications are acceptable?

Almost anything. This is an Ultrabook competition so you need to ensure your application takes advantage of the new Ultrabook capabilities. If it's a Windows application then it will work, obviously, and if you accept cursor input then the touchscreen input will work out of the box, too. But they want more:

1) Make your app touch aware, not just touch enabled
2)or maybe integrate location data
3)or include smart connect support – have your apps respond to messages when the Ultrabook is sleeping
4)or maybe just go crazy with the sensors – tilt it, shake it, lift it or spin your Ultrabook around and have your app know what's going on. Great for game developers or those who just want to make a fun widget.
The more you show off what an Ultrabook can do, the more you demonstrate that an Ultrabook isn't your Dad's old, tired PC, the better your chances. Make your existing app engaging on an ultra-light, ultra-portable Ultrabook .

Make your existing app engaging on an ultra-light, ultra-portable Ultrabook.

Recover Your Password Efficiently By Using Recovery Console

Recover Your Password Efficiently By Using Recovery Console :

Recovering the password of your computer without the deletion of important data or system formatting can be tough. But if one knows how to use the recovery console, it is quite easy actually. This is how.

1)Recovery Console: What is it?

When your operating system seems to be malfunctioning, the recovery console is a feature, available in the Windows XP after it was first introduced in the Windows 2000, that helps you to restore and repair the computer to a more functional state.

2)How to operate the Recovery Console:

On turning on the computer, you have to insert your windows operating system CD and reboot your computer. You will be able to see a Welcome to Set Up screen, and you will have to press Enter to Setup Windows Now.
Once you see the licensing agreement, you’ll have to press F8 to accept it.
The next thing on screen will be an option to Repair.
Select your installation and press R to repair.
After the stage where you have to copy the files, your computer will reboot in about 15 seconds.
Do not press any other key. Setup will be resumed soon after and you shall notice that Install Windows is highlighted.
The Next Step is Tricky and should be paid careful attention
You must keep a firm eye on the lower, left-hand side of the screen and as soon as you see that part of the screen read Installing Devices press ‘Shift+F10’. A command console should pop up giving you the chance to a wider access of your computer. When you’re at the prompt, you must type out- ‘NUSRMGR.CPL’ and press Enter.
This gives you access to the ‘User Accounts’ on the Control Panel.

3)What Next?

Pick the account that needs the change of password. Change your password as you desire. If you want to have to log on without being prompted for the password, then at the prompt you can type ‘control userpasswords2’ and choose to log on, without a password.
After having made the necessary changes, you may close the windows, quit the command box and continue with the procedure of Repair.
It is recommended that you use the Recovery Console only if you are well versed with the Commands

Unlock the secret GOD MODE folder

Windows 7 trick: unlock the secret GOD MODE folder

QUESTION : So, what exactly is God Mode in Windows 7?

Well, for starters, it's not really a mode. And it's nothing you need to be a deity to pull off, either.

Rather, it's a folder packed with shortcuts to just about every settings change and administrative function in Windows 7. Everything you'll find in the Action Center, Backup and Restore, Autorun, Desktop Gadgets, Devices and Printers -- it's all there. All dumped in one central location for easy access.

No, this trick doesn't involve entering IDDQD in the run box - but it's just about that simple. Here's the magic, as provided by the guys at Windows 7 Themes:

1) Create a new folder anywhere .

2)Rename the folder and paste in the following text:
GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C}

Snapshot :

That's it! You've now got your new, somewhat handy folder. Why somewhat handy? Well, because you can already access everything in there by typing a few letters into the search box on your start menu.
Still, it's a pretty long list of things to remember - so having a nice reference like this could actually be useful from time to time.

Problem Steps Recorder

Problem Steps Recorder (Windows 7 update)

As the local PC guru you're probably very used to friends and family asking for help with their computer problems, yet having no idea how to clearly describe what's going on. It's frustrating, but Microsoft feels your pain, and Windows 7 has an excellent new solution in the Problem Steps Recorder.
When any app starts misbehaving under Windows 7 then all your friends need do is :

i) Click Start,
ii) Type PSR and press Enter,
iii) Then click Start Record.

If they then work through whatever they're doing then the Problem Steps Recorder will record every click and keypress, take screen grabs, and package everything up into a single zipped MHTML file when they're finished, ready for emailing to you. It's quick, easy and effective, and will save you hours of troubleshooting time.

Hidden Facts about Windows 7Hidden Facts about Windows 7

Hidden Facts about Windows 7 :

1. Standard approach to mobile broadband
Windows 7 treats cellular modems as a standard connection, much like a Wi-Fi network, popping them up in the same available wireless networks dialog.

Sierra Wireless has already said it will support the new approach, which should make life much easier for road warriors (myself included). One of my few gripes about the prebeta Windows 7 laptop I’m using is that it doesn’t recognize my relatively new USB Sprint modem.

2. Help with public Wi-Fi spots.
This was a little feature I discovered on my own. With many public Wi-Fi hot spots, once you connect to the network, you have to do something in your browser, such as agree to certain terms or enter a password. Windows 7 pops up a notification that tells you that, although you have to be connected to the network, more action may be needed and it gives you a direct link to open your browser.

3. Windows Troubleshooting
Sure, it would be better if your computer worked problem-free. But, acknowledging that’s not the case, Microsoft has added a central place in Windows 7 to try to figure out what went wrong and why.

Among the kinds of problems that Windows Troubleshooting aims to help solve are issues with networked printers, detecting hard drive problems, and even some proactive things, like figuring out how much life a laptop battery has before it will likely need to be replaced with a new battery.

4. New sensor support
Windows 7 adds base-level support for all kinds of sensors, from GPS, to fingerprint readers, to ambient light sensors, to accelerometers. Light sensors, for example, can now be used not only to light up a keyboard, but an application could sense daylight and make type larger so that it’s easier to read.

At WinHEC, Microsoft handed out 700 free sensor developer kits that included a light sensor, touch pad, and accelerometer. The kit was a big hit with the developers, prompting one of the only long lines of the show.

5. Improved battery life and playback of DVDs
Microsoft is trying to do a couple things to make the DVD-playing experience better in Windows 7.

First and foremost, it has changed things so that DVD movies just start playing, as opposed to bringing up a long list of options.

Second, the company has worked to adjust power settings while playing back movies to enable better battery life.

“I’m hopeful it will have battery life equivalent to a portable DVD player,” Microsoft’s Jon DeVaan said in an interview. The issue is personal, he said. If Microsoft can reach its goal, he might be able to only bring a laptop on outings. “I hope to spare my back on family trips,” he said.

6. Windows Biometric Framework
According to a press release from fingerprint sensor make AuthenTec, the operating system features improved biometric support that should enable a more standard way for fingerprint management applications to work with fingerprint readers in Windows 7.

“This provides ease of fingerprint sensor integration for PC manufacturers and a more consistent user experience,” AuthenTec said in its release.

7. Enhancements to Windows Media Center
Microsoft hasn’t given up on its dream of having Windows gain a prominent spot in the living room and its main effort in this area–Windows Media Center–is back in Windows 7.

Use the Secret Send To Menu Items

Use the Secret Send To Menu Items :

When you right-click on any file or folder, you can use the Send To menu to create a zipped version, or send the file to an application, but in Windows 7 there are hidden items on the Send To menu that

can't be seen by default.

All you have to do is hold down the Shift key, then right-click on a file and access the Send To folder—you'll see a whole bunch of new items in the list, like special folders, and even an item for each one of your drives. It's a really useful tip for quickly sending a file to the flash drive you just plugged into the PC, without having to do anything else.

How To Change WordPress Admin Password From SQL Database

How To Change WordPress Admin Password From SQL Database :

However if your website gets hacked or due to any reason you lose access to both your email and wordpress than such a sitution can be handled by changing the password from SQL.

Passport Status through SMS

Passport Status through SMS :

You can check the status of your passport application through SMS (Short Message Service). Checking passport status via SMS is especially useful when you do not have access to Internet.

The Ministry of External Affairs introduced the SMS service to provide a simple way to check passport status using mobile phones.
To receive passport status on your mobile phone, all you need to do is send an SMS from your mobile phone to 55352 in the format "PPTAP FileNumber" without the double-quotes.

For example, to receive the status of the passport application with file reference number HYDR01234512, you will send the SMS message, "PPTAP HYDR01234512".

You can send an SMS from any mobile phone, not necessarily the one mentioned in your passport application. The message you send is not case-sensitive. In other words, "pptap hydr01234512" will be treated the same as "PPTAP HYDR01234512".

A successful SMS reply would look something like this, "RPO HYD :R01234512: Passport has been dispatched on 13-01-2012 vide Speed Post No. S123456". If you send an invalid file number, you will receive a response similar to this, "Please send your File Number as per the format HYDB00012309".

Please note that you will be charged for using the SMS facility.
